Rosso di Montalcino is the little brother of Brunello. Produced from the same grape, he will appreciate faster and provide access to the sangiovese grosso for a more affordable price. This is a good accessible and affordable wine that will suffer livestock but shorter than its big brother. Brunello is the name of a variant of the Sangiovese grape, not to be confused with the town of Brunello in the Lombardy region of Italy. It can be considered, with Barolo and Sagrantino, as the Italian red wine with the best longevity. The Brunello is very recent compared to the long history of Italian wine. It was in 1870 that Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, a young winemaker, replanted its grapes from a vine variety (Sangiovese Grosso) particularly resistant to phylloxera. Ferruccio Biondi-Santi seeks to move away from local traditions, who want young red wines, sometimes sparkling, and imposes long aging in oak barrels, followed by a further period of refining in bottle. Thus, the first official vintage of brunello in 1888; there would still be five bottles of this vintage. In an intense ruby red color, tending to garnet with aging, this wine has a characteristic aroma and intense with fruit, notes of wooded and das time an extreme complexity that can bring notes of truffle for example. The palate is warm, built on a base tannic, robust and harmonious. Padeletti the area is a historic family estate in the municipality. The owner likes to explain and explain again that it is they who invented the Brunello Biondi-Santi and not as their first bottles date from before 1870. Anyway, this area works well and they offer wines built to guard it will take. We were lucky to have taste very old vintage that always brought a lot of fun. A nice discovery at a reasonable price.
